Study Task 06 - Requirements of practical investigation

Practical Investigation Intro
27 / 10 / 15

Practice-based research is a form of research methodology that uses “practice”, alongside other forms, as a means of discovering or generating knowledge.
While the emphasis is still very much on establishing a critical understanding of the issue,  practice-based research acknowledges the role of making and visual communication in establishing this understanding.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MODERNISM IN DESIGN TODAY
Considerations 1

1.TECHNIQUE(s)- type design, layout, editorial, web.. At what point is modernism not applicable within projects?
2.CONTENT - What will my practical investigation contain? Modernism refers to modes of communication - need a brief to explore its principles of design - publications/posters
3.COMMUNICATION / MESSAGE - How it will do it. Cultural meanings and social meanings within my work?
THESE SHOW THEMES AND CONTENT OF MY WORK^

4.RESEARCH / ANALYSIS -  Primary/Secondary - Talk to an audience/show from past works that have been carried out. Branch from that further. How will I ensure work informs what it is suppose to?
5.EXPLORATION / EVALUATION - What have I done to find out what I now know - what process? what went well and what didn't? What direction did crits send me in?
6.TESTING - put it in an environment and test the response and how efficiently it works.

METHODOLOGY INVOLVED^
To Consider 2:

Write a rationale for your practical investigation using the following points as a guide:
1.What is your research question?
  • “To what extent have Modernist design principles influenced contemporary Graphic Design?”
2.Do you have a hypothesis (an assumed conclusion that you will endeavour to prove)?
3.What are the contexts of your research interests (politics, advertising, consumerism)?
4.Sources of primary/secondary research.
5.How will your practical work answer the research question?
6.What methods will you use to research, develop, create and test your work?

7.Provide a proposed timeline for your work to completion (consider carefully whether you will need access to college facilities).

Idea Generation
27 / 10 / 15

- Timeline - similar to P&P or the LCA timeline, build onto rebrand?
- Movie Posters? Iconic old movie posters with modernist concepts and principles within. Forward thinking, technology advancing concepts
- Play on idea of WW2 & Industrial Revolution having this huge impact on modernism - a series of posters showing this
                    - controversial & sour humour
- Design branding for a complete modernist inspired coffee shop or something along those lines? A local company? Rebrand
- Is this 'universal style' applicable to all projects? For example, a rock/punk rock band?! Does it work for projects that need to portray a different mood..
British Hardcore Band called 'Heights' make use of Helvetica as the minimalist modern logo style, I could base my project around pushing a modernist typeface/theme as far as it can go in terms of 'suiting' a specific project e.g. metal band  ...

From their various album art and appearance on event posters, would you relate the style of their identity to be a British Hardcore Band? (In comparison with other band logos) This idea could be pushed quite far..

- A very Modernist inspired Lookbook Publication. Quite fashion based however, content focusing on the development of now-modern surrealist collage.. Have features on how it has developed with technology. Don't necessarily focus too much on the content of surrealist collage but focus on the modernist principles I will show within the lookbook publication.

- The New 'Modernist' - hipster?
Again, we're broken down into the current sub-groups of society which portray forward thinking 'modern' mindsets.. Different styles like skater, r&b, hip-hop, indie, etc - in relation to music
