Study Task 05 - Planning & Structuring an Essay

Planning & Structuring an Essay
27 / 10 / 15

I have decided change my essay question at this point from Gender and Advertising to focusing on the Modernism question instead. This is as I feel more obliged to broadening my knowledge within the movement and how it actually influenced the practise I am part of today.  The question is: “To what extent have Modernist design principles influenced contemporary Graphic Design?". This question allows me to look at how the Modernist movement on a whole, has influenced styles and principles within graphic design since the beginning. I can look at the various sub-movements across the globe which began forming and developing and then actually influencing eachothers practises through their manifestos and exhibition work.

To begin with I will look at these five sources:

Greenhalgh, P (1990) Modernism in Design, London: Reaktion Books Ltd

Aiga. 1998. Long Live Modernism: Massimo Vignelli Reaffirms His Faith in Form and Function [Online] Available at: http://www.aiga.org/inspiration-massimo-vignelli-long-live-modernism/

Gablik, S (2004) Has Modernism Failed?, London: Thames & Hudson

Vignelli, M (2010) The Vignelli Canon, Germany: Lars Muller Publishers

Lupton, E & Cole Phillips, J (2015) Graphic Design The New Basics, New York: Princeton Architectural Press

I plan to look at numerous pieces of design within my essay which will relate to the sub-movements and then I may do an overall example where I can discuss the united principles of modernism within.

Herbert Bayer's universal typeface (1926) which is a perfect example of Bauhaus ideas: simple, economical of form, legible and clean, and international — no umlauts or capital letters to declare its German-ness! These all being popular characteristics of the typography used nowadays.

Development of my Essay Plan..

Introduction to Modernism
Broken down into Sub-Movements
De Stijl, Bauhaus & Suprematism/Constructivism
Principles of each + example in design
United principles of modernism on a whole
Relate to design now
