A piece of design inspired by Modernism or a sub-movement within it.
In my essay, I discussed mainly De Stijl, Bauhaus and Suprematism/Constructivism however I will note I am very interested in Surrealist collage and how the modern movement has influenced its practise and developed it further into the works which I can appreciate now. However this is not something I went into detail in within my essay. As I would like to experiment with this style and it does relate to modernism (which can be developed) I could look to include the content of this within a publication type design or another piece of graphic design, such as a series of poster/flyers.
I came up with the idea of producing a publication/lookbook piece of design. Who's design principles will be justified through modernism and its principles, or even dismissive of certain principles which I feel do not carry over into contemporary graphics or even just within my work. I can then still fill the content of the small publication with my own personal interest practise and communicate my own current personal moods and concepts. Leaving me with a nice publication representative of the project but also my current practise interests!
Modernist Lookbook Design (initial thoughts)
- very clean and minimal
- reasonably thick, textured stock
- quite white-washed
- representative of me and where I am with design at this point in time
- Consider the united principles and characteristics of modernism
- Content will look at how todays surrealist art which I appreciate and view has been developed alongside CAD and other technologies, making collage designs more efficient and giving them more digital opportunities which analogue processes may not offer
- Take inspiration from lookbooks and editorials I already have access to.
- Could actually take the images I use from lookbooks, also from my own photography which represents similar styles/stances - more personal
Collage Artists:
Rocio Montoya - is a photographer, graphic / web designer and editor based in Madrid, Spain.
Throughout her career as an artist she has made a personal exploration of behaviours and emotional states, transforming reality by manipulating the image to convey an individuals perception of the environment through aesthetic experiences.
She immersed herself in the field of visual arts by curiosity to express her concerns and the need to seek beauty as a means of escape and personal enjoyment. Her admiration for painting and surrealism is evident in addressing their creations, which you can see a clear trend to recreate atmospheres and distant situations to pure documentary reality, characterised by a delicate, haunting and poetic graphic style.
She often uses the human body in synergy with nature, the female figure and the loss of identity are the conceptual basis of her work.
For me, it provides deeper meanings focused on what aesthetical experiences we have had and how that makes up who we are and what is inside of us. Thus it is what is protruding through, but the image has different values to us all.. I love that
(Again the next artist can show similar ideas and contexts)
Melinda Gibson
- uses alot of space/nebula images
- gives new perspectives on concepts
- visual narratives
